Why we like it

Cream cheese and horseradish turn smoked mackerel into a smooth, punchy spread in minutes, and dense rye bread stands up to it. Mackerel contains omega-3 fats, and there is no cooking involved.

Ingredients

  • 2 smoked mackerel fillets (skin removed)
  • 100g cream cheese
  • 1 tbsp horseradish sauce
  • 1 lemon
  • Fresh dill
  • Black pepper
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • Cucumber slices
  • Capers

Method

  1. Remove skin and any bones from mackerel.
  2. Break into a bowl and mash roughly with a fork.
  3. Add cream cheese, horseradish, lemon juice and dill.
  4. Mix until combined — leave some texture.
  5. Season with black pepper.
  6. Taste and adjust lemon/horseradish balance.
  7. Serve on rye bread slices.
  8. Top with cucumber, capers and extra dill.
